- Pürüoügürüaümü Düeüsücürüiüpütüiüoünü
-
- Double is a program which will split most ASCII text files
- and print the file on both sides of paper. It is best used with
- continuous form paper and a printer with tractor feed.
- Double was originally written by me for my own use. I found
- it worked quite well for printing the documentation which comes
- with most downloaded software. Using Double enabled me to use
- half the paper and store twice the documents in binders than
- would have been possible without it. It also will work well
- with word processors which store text in ASCII format, but don't
- allow printing of every other page.
- The system requirements are as follows;
-
- IBM PC or compatible, with 128k RAM, and at least 1 disk drive.
- A printer, preferably with tractor feed.
-
- NOTE: Double uses no printer control codes, it should work
- with any printer, with the exception of laser printers.

- The following instructions assume you are familier with
- basic DOS commands. You should know how to change drives and
- directories. Also, it may be necessary to edit some text files
- before Double can split them properly. To do this, you may need
- an editor or a word processor which can edit ASCII text files.
- Usually, this won't be necessary, but knowing how to use one may
- help.

- If you have a floppy drive system, insert the disk with the
- Double program on it into the A drive and the disk with the text
- file to be split into the B drive. For owners of a 1 floppy
- drive system copy the text file onto the disk which contains
- Double and insert the disk in the A drive. If you have a hard
- drive system, switch to the directory containing Double. At the
- DOS prompt, type in DOUBLE and press the eÇnÇtÇeÇrÇ key. In a few
- moments the Main Menu will appear and display several options.
-
-
- Oüpütüiüoünü 1ü:ü Eünütüeürü oürü Cühüaünügüeü Düoücüuümüeünütü
-
- The first option is "Enter or Change Current Document".
- This option should be used to specify the drive and directory of
- the text file (document) to be split, the complete filename, and
- the drive and directory for the split files (Double splits the
- text file into two text files named Side1.doc and Side2.doc) .
- Pressing the "1" key will begin this portion of the program.
- Double displays the current path (drive and directory) for
- the text file. "DEFAULT" will be displayed the first time this

- option is used. If the text file is on the default directory just
- press eÇnÇtÇeÇrÇ. Otherwise, the drive and directory for the text file
- must be entered in the proper manner (d:\directory), do not end
- with a backslash (\).
- Next the program will display the current document filename
- (if any) and accept a new filename (you must include the
- extension). If the current filename is acceptable, simply press
- eÇnÇtÇeÇrÇ. A convenient option to this is to type in a qÇuÇeÇsÇtÇiÇoÇnÇ
- mÇaÇrÇkÇ (?) and press eÇnÇtÇeÇrÇ. When a question mark is entered,
- Double will display the filenames on the document drive and
- directory, and ask for a new document filename.
- After the filename has been specified, Double displays the
- current path where the split files will be written. Once again,
- if this is the first time this option is selected, "DEFAULT" is
- displayed. Pressing eÇnÇtÇeÇrÇ without entering anything will keep
- the current path. If a new path is desired, it can be entered
- and the path will be changed.
- When this is complete the screen will clear and the document
- filename, document path, and split files path will be displayed.
- You will be asked to verify correctness with a Y or an N and
- pressing eÇnÇtÇeÇrÇ. Entering Y will return you to the Main Menu, and
- entering N will return you to the beginning of this option.
-

-
- From the Main Menu, selecting option 2 will allow the
- selected document file to be displayed on the screen. If no
- document file has been selected (using Main Menu option 1), an
- error message will be displayed, and pressing any key will
- return to the Main Menu. If a filename has been specified, the
- screen will prompt you to press any key to begin displaying the
- file to your screen.
- Anytime you wish to return to the Main Menu you may press
- the F10 key. (This is not just for this option but for any other
- option as well. It may be necessary to press eÇnÇtÇeÇrÇ after
- pressing F10 if you are prompted for input.) If you have
- pressed any key (other than F10) the document file will begin to
- display on your screen.
- If Double cannot find the file, an error message will be
- displayed along with an error code. This code can be looked up
- in your BASIC manual and corrective action can be taken. Most
- often, there is a problem with the filename or path, which was
- entered using option 1 from the Main Menu.
- Assuming all is ok, the document will display on your screen
- approximately 20 lines at a time. On the bottom of your screen
- you will be directed to press the Q key to return to Main Menu,
- or any other key to continue the display. When the end of the
- file is reached, pressing any key will return you to the Main
- Menu.
- During the file display, Double locates any page break
- characters and displays them as "---------- End Page N
- ----------", where N is the page number. Also, when these page
- breaks are found, line numbering on the left of your screen
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- starts counting from one until the next page break is found.
- These are important when you actually split the file using
- option 3 from the Main Menu.
-
-
- Oüpütüiüoünü 3ü:ü Süpülüiütütüiünügü tühüeü Tüeüxütü Füiülüeü
-
- Selecting option 3 from the Main Menu will do the splitting
- of the document file. You will be asked to enter a page length.
- If you have displayed the document to screen using option 2 and
- have found page breaks in the document file, you most likely
- want to enter 67. However, if you don't care for the existing
- page breaks or there are no page breaks, you should enter a
- number less than 67. For most documents a page length from 50 to
- 60 works well. Some documents do not have any page breaks but
- fill in with blank lines for proper formatting. Entering 66 will
- split these properly. One thing this program will not do is
- renumber pages. When you ignore existing page breaks in a
- document with numbered pages, you may lose correct page number
- sequencing. If you do not know what to enter and wish to return
- to the Main Menu, press F10 and eÇnÇtÇeÇrÇ.
- Entering a valid number will begin the splitting process. If
- an error has occured, an error message will be displayed with
- the error code. Otherwise, the document file will be accessed
- line by line and split according to your instructions.
- When the document file has been split the screen will clear
- and display an appropiate message. Also, the number of pages
- will be displayed for Side1 and Side2. The maximum line length
- will be displayed and you will be prompted to enter the maximum
- print width. The print width determines two things, the first is
- the left margin for Side1, and the other allows for compressed
- or wide carriage printing. Some documents do not allow enough of
- a left margin for holes to be punched so the printed document
- can be placed in a binder. Setting print width can make up for
- this, if you desire a left margin of 5 and the maximum line
- length is 75 then enter 80 for maximum print width. When
- printing a document using compressed or condensed print mode,
- the print width should be set to allow for this. There is no
- option in this program to send special codes to the printer.
- Print codes should be sent prior to loading this program or
- using a memory resident printing utility prior to printing the
- document.

- The "Print Split Document" option prints the split files
- created from using option 3. First, it reads the document
- "Side1.doc" from the path for split files specified using option
- 1. When Side1.doc has been printed, you will be prompted to turn
- the paper over to allow "Side2.doc" to be printed on the
- backside of Side1. The best way to handle this printing is to
- use continuous form paper and a tractor feed printer. Always
- have at least one blank piece of paper before the first page of

- your document and set your top of form (usually easily
- accomplished by doing a form feed) and align your paper.
- When you select option 4 from the Main Menu the screen will
- clear and instruct you to press P to begin. When you press the P
- key (press F10 to return to Main Menu), the printing process
- should begin and a message telling you to press any key to
- pause printing. If for some reason you do need to pause the
- printing, you will be prompted to press Q to return to the Main
- Menu or any other key to resume printing.
- When Side1 has finished printing, the program will pause and
- wait for you to turn the paper over and rethread your printer.
- After you have completed that task, press P to begin printing
- Side2.doc. Upon completion of Side2, a message will indicate to
- press any key to return to the Main Menu.
